    Understanding the Significance of PEM Membranes: A Guide

    The working principle of hydrogen water produced by hydrogen water bottles and hydrogen kettles is to decompose water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen through electrolysis. In this wonderful electrolysis process, the proton exchange membrane plays a vital role. Today this article will discuss the working principle of proton exchange membrane (PEM)in hydrogen water generator.

     

    What is a proton exchange membrane?

    Proton exchange membrane, also known as proton membrane or hydrogen ion exchange membrane, is an ion-selective permeable membrane that plays a role in providing channels for proton migration and transmission, separating gaseous reactants, and blocking electrolyte in batteries.

     

    How do PEM work in hydrogen-rich devices?

    In order to make it easier for you to understand how PEM works, experience this electrolysis process to help you better understand the role of the proton exchange membrane:

     

    1. Electrolysis of water: The inside of the hydrogen-rich water bottle contains two electrodes, a cathode and an anode, and a proton membrane separating them. The electrolysis process begins when water enters the hydrogen-rich bottle and comes into contact with the poles.
    2. Water decomposition: At the anode, water molecules are electrolysed into hydrogen ions (H+) and oxygen (O₂).This is the main electrolytic reaction of water.
    3. Proton conduction: Proton exchange membrane plays a role in proton conduction. It only allows hydrogen ions (protons) produced by the anode to reach the cathode through the proton exchange membrane.
    4. Hydrogen dissolution: After the proton reaches the cathode through the PEM, it combines with the electron to form hydrogen. At this point, the hydrogen will dissolve in the water, producing hydrogen rich water.
    5. Prevent the mixing of oxygen and hydrogen: the proton exchange membrane only allows protons to pass through, and prevents the passage of electrons and oxygen. This allows hydrogen and oxygen to remain separate during electrolysis, avoiding possible safety risks.
